Longmont, CO - September 24, 2002 - Niwot Networks, Inc. (http://www.gigabytex.com), a leading vendor of high performance communication software, announced today that the United States Patent Office assigned Patent Number 6,445,717 to their RELIA™ Technology. Initially filed on May 1, 1998, the Patent was officially granted on September 3, 2002 as a system for recovering lost information in a data stream. RELIA is an extension which adds parity to TCP, the basic transport for Internet applications such as email, web browsing, and file transfer.
With existing TCP, software detects corrupted or missing information packets and retransmits the lost information. The RELIA patent covers the combination of information recovery using parity packets and the ability to retransmit should the recovery be unsuccessful. RELIA technology is the logical next step for environments which suffer from the combination of packet loss and longer delay, e.g. the international and satellite Internet.
“Lost information packets are a fact of life on the Internet,” said Bill Gibson, President and CTO of Niwot Networks. “RELIA sends a little extra data to allow the receiver to recover the lost information. This eliminates the wait time and the retransmission associated with lost information. With RELIA, your data moves efficiently even when information is being lost. Think of it as RAID for the Internet.”
One of the world’s largest multinational conglomerates sends thousands of files from California to India on a daily basis for remote processing. According to one of their Sr. Systems Engineer, “When using TCP/IP to send 145MB of image files to India it took us 8 hours to complete the transmission and when sending the same amount using RELIA, it took 40 minutes. Unbelievable difference! We literally watched files fly out of here! I would recommend RELIA as a transport method in any WAN environment.”

RELIA is available in the form of a Dynamic Link Library (DLL) and Niwot is licensing this technology to software developers interested in increasing the performance of their applications over congested and long delay IP networks.
