Gigabyte
Express 5 Release
International
Internet File Transfer for Windows NT, 2000, and 98 with RELIA
Technology
Boulder, CO. - July 24, 2000 - Niwot
Networks, Inc.; the performance leader in Internet file transfer software,
is pleased to announce that its Gigabyte Express 5 for Windows NT, 2000,
and 98 with RELIA Technology is available for demonstration. RELIA is a
major breakthrough technology for international Internet file
transfers.
With 4 percent
packet loss, and 2:1 compressible files, Gigabyte Express 5 with RELIA
Technology is 23.5 times as fast as Windows NT FTP over the satellite
Internet, 15 times as fast on the international
Internet, and 10.3 times as fast on the national
Internet.
Gigabyte Express 5
features:
-
RELIA (Patent Pending) Technology-Enhances TCP
(Transmission Control Protocol) to handle packet loss (also called
congestion) and long delay (also called ping time or latency); your
information gets through under harsh network
conditions
-
File Pipeline-Improves international multi-file transfers by sending multiple files without
waiting for an acknowledgement for each file, 5 times as fast for large
numbers of small files.
-
Congestion Report-Reports counts of Packets Lost and Packets Sent for each direction
separately.Helps you quantify and isolate network congestion.
-
Advanced Scheduling-Provides unattended scheduled file transfers at specified times to
specified destinations ; lets you sleep at night instead of babysitting
file transfers.
-
Link Rate Governor-Presets bandwidth consumption during file transfers; you limit how much
of your Internet or intranet connection bandwidth is consumed by file
transfers.
-
On-the-Fly Compression- Stacker (LZS
Lossless Compression).
Backgrounder
Niwot Networks' Gigabyte Express is a mission-critical, business-to-business bulk data transfer solution that replaces traditional File Transfer Protocol (FTP). Gigabyte Express was designed and optimized for unattended operation and reliable throughput over long distance and congested Internet and intranet connections. File transfer is peer-to-peer, with Gigabyte Express running at both the sending and receiving nodes. While making Gigabyte Express the fastest way to move files over the Internet, Niwot found that packet loss and delay on the Internet hobbles the performance of all Internet applications. This performance can be dramatically improved with Niwot's RELIA (Patent Pending) Technology.
RELIA(Patent Pending) Technology
Niwot's RELIA Technology is an extension to TCP which adds redundant information that enables the receiver to reconstruct lost information without requiring the time delay of retransmission.
RELIA Technology also adds support of 32 bit window size. The first application to support RELIA is Niwot's Gigabyte Express for Windows 5.
RELIA Technology uses Large Window and Packet Recovery techniques to optimize throughput over the congested international and satellite Internet or intranets.
"Our customers have an Unfair Advantage", said Bill Gibson, Chief Technology Officer of Niwot Networks. "Faced with congestion at a network bottleneck,
RELIA Technology wins like a bulldozer competing in a traffic jam."
Historically, the Internet was made possible by the evolution of algorithms for making an unreliable data transport act reliably. The first of these was the Ethernet standard, where hardware retransmitted lost (collision) packets without software intervention. The second was TCP, where software detects corrupted or missing packets and takes responsibility for retransmission. RELIA technology is the logical next step for packet loss in longer delay situations, eliminating the need for retransmissions in most cases.
